A Few Important Political Events In US History

The nation of America has experienced quite a lot throughout its history, but some events have marked the country in very defining ways. We will take a look at some of them: 

The Declaration of Independence (1776)

This document served as the foundation of the American revolution and pursuit of freedom. For all the other things that occurred in the 1770s, this was the document that gave context and meaning to it all. 

Whiskey Rebellion (1794)

In the early days of the United States, a rebellion in western Pennsylvania forced President George Washington to send troops to quiet things down. The rebellion revolved around whiskey. Alexander Hamilton had imposed the liquor tax to raise money for the national debt and assert the government’s role. This led to the Whiskey Rebellion, in which citizens refused to pay it. Those who aligned themselves with Thomas Jefferson’s Republican Party were angry with government overreach, while Federalists cheered the triumph of national authority. The story remains the same today, even if the faces have changed. 

Atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki (1945)

Every history student knows of the terrible bombings that introduced the nuclear era into world politics. After the attack perpetrated by the Japanese on Pearl Harbor (December 1941), the US entered World War II on the Allies’ side. As the war in Europe ended in 1945, US forces advanced on Japan, and President Harry S. Truman dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, hoping that the resulting destruction would prevent an even more significant death toll caused by a protracted invasion.
