What Is The Metaverse?

By Toby Tunwase

So, you probably saw on the news or on your social media feed that Facebook has changed its name to Meta, and you wondered what that meant. You are not alone, and a good part of the world is still trying to figure out what the concept means. However, here is what we have gathered about the metaverse so far.

As simply as we can put it, the metaverse is like a 3D iteration of the internet and social media. It is a platform where you can live your entire life online if you want to. It provides individuals with the chance not just to see digital content but also to immerse themselves in a way that intersects the physical with the virtual. Investopedia has defined it as a digital reality that weaves social media, online gaming, augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and cryptocurrencies into a virtual interaction for users (paraphrased).

According to Zuckerberg himself, the defining quality of the metaverse will be the feeling of being right there with another person or in another location. So, for example, holograms will allow you to teleport instantly to the office without having to commute, to a music concert with friends, or to catch up with your parents. We all knew that the world was changing fast, but with the metaverse and other technological creations coming up, it looks like we have hit another gear. It is undoubtedly an exciting and interesting time to be alive.
